STDL Advanced Apprenticeships

Siemens Blog - Monday, February 14, 2011

STDL is an integral part of the Siemens Energy global network of companies, servicing an immense international power generation market.  Operating in partnership with customers in the electricity supply industry and industrial markets, STDL provide individual solutions to complex problems involving electrical power transmission and distribution.  Skilled resource is required to fuel the growing demand for our services and apprentices will be central to the business as it moves forward.

In 2007 Siemens Transmission and Distribution Ltd launched an Advanced Apprenticeship scheme.  Initially the 7 workshop based (craft) and 2 office based (technical) apprentices attended a full-time bespoke programme at TyneMet College, gaining a BTEC National Diploma in Engineering.  The apprentices then transferred to the Siemens Training Centre at Heaton, Newcastle-upon-Tyne to complete an NVQ2 qualification.  Returning to Services in Hebburn, the apprentices received training and practical experience in various departments, achieving NVQ3 qualifications.   Since, all 9 apprentices have progressed to further or higher education.

The Advanced Apprenticeship scheme has been a resounding success and in February 2011 STDL began a search for the next batch of apprentices to join the 4 year programme commencing in September 2011.
